Hitch a Ride
Frozen selfishness.
This is a favorite of mine. It’s chillingly hypnotic, sez me.
It’s about someone I lived with for a time. To seemingly everyone else in town, he was a charming, talented guy, but what I saw was a manipulative snake whose self-interests at times excluded even his own family.
Like the time his teenage daughter called me in the middle of the night needing a ride home from a party out in the middle of nowhere because she was afraid to call her dad.
That’s what/who this song’s about. I wanted it to sound ice-cold.
Music note: I like this song so much I actually recorded it twice. The first time involved a few layers of my old Fender Rhodes electric piano with a bass part courtesy of a friend of mine, John Marsh, accompanied by a robotic early drum machine. The second time, I used samples of my long-gone Rhodes, with programmed drums imitating that old beat box (somewhere in the basement), and a bass part I put together myself, having lost track of John. I also added the guitars, synth, and shaker. Actually, I later rebuilt it in my current recording app a third time for mixing, transferring tracks from the second version. So, two and a half times? Like I said, I like this one.
Hitch a ride and I’ll meet you down the road Even though I understand it’s getting fairly cold Hitch a ride and I’ll meet you on the way Everything is just the same as yesterday
Keep it to yourself Solve it on your own Don’t talk to someone else Find your own way home
Hitch a ride and I’ll meet you down the road Even though I understand it’s getting fairly cold Hitch a ride and I’ll meet you on the way Everything is just the same as yesterday
You’ve taken what I’ve got Tell me no more lies Everything you need My money will not buy
Hitch a ride and I’ll meet you down the road Even though I understand it’s getting fairly cold Hitch a ride and I’ll meet you on the way Everything is just the same, the same as yesterday
Hitch a ride and I’ll meet you down the road Even though I understand it’s getting fairly cold Hitch a ride and I’ll meet you on the way Everything is just the same as yesterday Everything is just the same as yesterday Everything is just the same as yesterday.
